Dowend
House Farm in Horfield.
In the early 19th century the farm was occupied
by
my great-great-great-granduncle
Charles Smith, but by the 1880s it had become
home
to Edward Dewfall of
Henstridge, Somerset. Edward and later his son Arthur
lived
at Downend House until
well into the 20th century. The family became well
known
in the area and locals
even referred to the building as Dewfalls Farm. Arthur
Dewfall
delivered milk in
a horse and cart and his wife Amy ran a small shop in the
farm
itself. As with nearby
Downend Park Farm this building was once in the open
Gloucestershire
countryside,
but is now surrounded by roads and modern housing.
The farm was substantially rebuilt in the 1980s and is now subdivided
into individual properties.
